The Father may not have been too comfortable with the demands made by the younger son, but he must have realized at some point that the younger boy needed to learn a lesson. By giving in to his demands, he was allowing him to learn on his own. I know how difficult it is sometimes as parents to watch our kids make their own mistakes, but it is important for us to give our kids the needed space to grow, to learn from their own mistakes. Sometimes, experience is truly the best teacher. For instance, your child doesn’t get his project work done on time [except of course for the younger ones requiring supervision], and he’s in the habit of leaving things till the last minute. What do you do? You help him so he won’t hand in his project late? Maybe you can try allowing him to face the consequences of handing in his project late, that way he’ll learn, and the next time, you won’t have to pick up the pieces after him all the time.

14 About the time his money ran out, a great famine swept over the land, and he began to starve. 15 He persuaded a local farmer to hire him, and the man sent him into his fields to feed the pigs. 16 The young man became so hungry that even the pods he was feeding the pigs looked good to him.
